What is government?Government is supposed to protect the rights of the people. It is chosen and made up by the people and is supposed to act in the interests of the people. Our federal government operates through three branches: the executive branch (made up of the President, Vice President, and Cabinet), the legislative branch (made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate), and the judicial branch (made up of the Supreme Court and federal courts). There are various checks and balances to keep any one branch from becoming too powerful. Also, state governments are given authority over certain issues which are then legislated by the state government.
